Raising Creative Souls in a Non-Toxic Home

There’s something deeply powerful about raising children in a home where the air is clean, the materials are simple, and love is the thread running through everything.

I’ve always tried to live as naturally as I can, choosing non-toxic materials, keeping our home chemical free, using simple, safe supplies. Out of respect, out of a quiet commitment to creating a space where their bodies, minds, and imaginations can thrive.

Over the years, my daughters have grown up creating in every way possible, painting, drawing, sculpting, storytelling. Nature walks turn into art projects. Scraps of fabric become fairy dresses. Acorns become characters in stories only they know.

Recently, they gathered what we had around the house, tissue paper, a wooden peg doll, pipe cleaners, markers, and made a little angel. They told me it was to protect me while I sleep. They closed their eyes, held it in their hands, and put their energy into it. Then they set it gently on my nightstand.

And I feel it.

Every night, when I lie down, I feel it. The angel. Their love. Their intention. It’s more than a craft, it’s a blessing. A quiet kind of magic that only a child could create.

I think about all the years we spent doing crafts at the kitchen table, often during and after the homeschool pods I hosted. There were moments of glitter spills and glue mishaps, but there were also moments of joy, wonder, and connection. I see now how those hours shaped them. How they shaped me.

My girls tell me they love me multiple times a day. They give hugs on their own. They notice beauty in ordinary things. And while I know a time may come when they won’t always reach for my hand or curl up beside me with stories, I also know that something permanent has taken root.

Because in all the tiny moments, drawing with beeswax crayons, kneading homemade dough, sewing together felt animals, painting outside under the trees—we built something. Not just art, but trust. Not just crafts, but memory. We nurtured creativity, and in return, creativity nurtured us.

Living non-toxic isn’t just about what we take away. It’s about what we create space for.

In this case, it created room for magic, for safety, for deep connection. For little angels that sit quietly by the bed and remind me, again and again, that love is the most powerful thing we can raise our children in.
